Welcome to my website! The site provides information for everyone interested in farming and living in the countryside all over the world. My goal is to inform you about daily rural life in different places and farming techniques and innovations. Please share your ideas and comments at the different pages and posts. Some more information about myself:
In 2004, I visited Bangladesh to work with pig farmers as part of the internship for my study Animal Science at Wageningen University. As not so many people visit this country, not only my family and friends were interested in following my adventures, but some other people wanted to know more about it as well. So I blogged at dorieke.waarbenjij.nu about the trip. My first complete personal transformation (of my appearance) was there as I tried to truly integrate into the common daily life in Bangladesh.
Then, a few years later, Cuba was the next destination for my study. Again a country that is quite interesting, not only because it is one of the few Communist countries in the world, but there are some very interesting farming systems over there as well. I learned about integrated farming systems at the Instituto de Ciencia Animal (ICA) in San Jose de las Lajas and blogged about the Cuban life for my friends and family.
After this study, the interest in farmers remained, and I started working for ETC with Dutch dairy farmers working on environmental issues and improving economic results. Combining these two into good farm management by improving nutrient cycles on the farm was an interesting new vision on farming for me, that could be used by farmers all over the world. Results of the sustainable farming projects in The Netherlands are described at the website Duurzaam Boer Blijven (sorry, it is only in Dutch language…)
After working more than 3 years in Holland, it was time to travel the world again. During the last months of 201o I stayed in Ethiopia to see the great work of the farmers in this beautiful country, and subsequently I worked in Mongolia for 9 months (up to October 2011) as an agricultural income generation advisor. The last month of 2011 has been in wonderful Uganda and Kenya is visited in January and February of 2012. The stories about my life and activities can be found at this website.
